At Handcross, we just love reading and writing!
During the school day, children may read in small groups or 1-to-1 with an adult, with a peer, as a whole class or even as a whole key-stage during one of our "author assemblies". They may listen to audio CDs of favourite books and enjoy 'story time' with their teacher. Whatever the reading activity, we place a strong emphasis on high quality 'book talk' whereby all children are able to discuss and unpick carefully chosen, high quality texts. We expose children to a wide range of texts, styles and genres, including stories, non-fiction and poetry and both classic and contemporary texts. We believe that, at all levels, good quality reading is invaluable for good quality writing;

We aim to provide a stimulating and exciting learning experience for children in mathematics and are developing our mastery approach to teaching mathematics. We are also pleased to be part of the Sussex Maths Hub 'Mastery Readiness' programme which is aiding us in our development towards teaching for mastery;

Physical education
Our school believes that physical education and activity, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a vital contributor to a pupil's physical and mental development and well-being.
The school provides all pupils with the full entitlement of two hours high quality Physical Education a week and is aiming to increase this to three hours through the provision of a broad range of after school physical activities.
All pupils in the school have equality of opportunity in terms of curriculum balance, curriculum time, use of resources, use of facilities and access to extra-curricular activities;

We have a specialist French teacher, Vanessa Samandi, who comes from Warden Park Secondary Academy twice a week to teach the children French in the junior school. The children benefit hugely from her expertise and secondary schools are always very impressed by the high standards of French speaking from Handcross Primary School children;

At Handcross technology is at the core of everything we do. We are fortunate enough to have enough IPad's for every child in KS2 and enough for one between two in KS1. We use these in all areas of the curriculum to help our pupils to make progress;
